Abstract

|
This study was to explore and describe the smoking of Korean young adults in a life-course perspective. Thematic analysis was performed on the focus group data collected with 63 participants in 2017. Among five overarching themes, the ¡®stages of youth smoking¡¯, which consisted of a cycle of ¡®intermittent smoking¡¯, ¡®regular smoking¡¯ and ¡®potential smoking¡¯, illustrated the multi-phased, multi- faceted characteristics of smoking in young adulthood. Four other themes included 'smoking patterns according to relationships', ¡®opportunities to promote smoking', 'gender differences and discrimination' and 'skeptical view on tobacco control policy', which describe the contextual background and interaction factors of the smoking behaviors of Korean young adults. Policy interventions at the individual, interpersonal and organizational levels that take into account life-course characteristics are required along with the current tobacco control policies promoted at the national level.
